Elon Musk has stirred controversy after performing a one-armed gesture during a speech at Donald Trump’s inauguration celebration. While thanking the crowd, Musk raised his right hand over his heart and then extended it forward, repeating the gesture for those seated behind him. The motion was quickly compared on social media to the infamous Nazi salute.
Reactions on Social Media
The gesture triggered a swift reaction on X (formerly Twitter), with many users comparing it to the Nazi salute. In response, Musk took to the platform, saying: «Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everybody’s Hitler’ attack is tiresome.» Despite the accusations, the 53-year-old billionaire defended himself, insisting there was no intention to reference Nazi symbolism.
The incident took place during Musk’s speech at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C., where he stated: «My heart goes out to you. Because of you, the future of civilization is assured.» These words, alongside the gesture, quickly became a trending topic on social media.
Opinions from Historians and Experts
Historians, particularly those specializing in Nazism, also joined the debate. Claire Aubin, a historian focused on Nazism in the United States, described the gesture as a clear «sieg heil,» the famous Nazi salute. Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a history professor at New York University, also called it a very serious Nazi salute.
In Italy, Andrea Stroppa, a close Musk associate, tried to downplay the incident. He suggested that the gesture was simply Musk’s way of expressing his feelings, as Musk has autism. «Elon does not support extremists,» Stroppa later clarified in a follow-up post.
Defenses and Criticisms
Despite the backlash, some groups, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), defended Musk. The organization posted on X that the gesture appeared to be an awkward moment of enthusiasm and not a Nazi salute. However, the incident remains a hot topic of debate, especially given Musk’s increasing right-wing political affiliations.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who has recently shown support for far-right parties in Europe, continues to be a polarizing figure. His close ties to Donald Trump and growing conservative stance place him at the center of global political discussions.
