On Friday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared images showing immigrants handcuffed as they boarded military planes. In her post, she stated: “Deportation flights have begun.” This new approach, which uses military aircraft, represents a significant shift in U.S. immigration policies.
Use of Military Planes for Deportation
Traditionally, deportations were carried out on commercial flights, but now the U.S. government has turned to C-17 and C-130 military planes. These planes were sent to San Diego and El Paso to support repatriation flights. According to a senior military official, the first flights left Biggs Army Air Field heading to Guatemala, repatriating between 75 and 80 Guatemalans. This change in strategy reflects the hardening of immigration policies under President Donald Trump.
Trump Strengthens Measures Against Illegal Immigration
Since launching his re-election campaign, Trump has promised to take stricter actions to curb illegal immigration. He claims that the policies under Joe Biden’s administration have been too lenient, allowing a surge of undocumented migrants into the country.
As part of his agenda, Trump signed several executive orders expanding deportation measures. Among these are expedited deportations for undocumented immigrants and the elimination of birthright citizenship, a move that has sparked significant controversy. This action has been opposed by many constitutional experts and state and local officials, especially in Democratic-led states, who have already filed lawsuits against the measure.
Within hours of taking office, Trump enacted impactful decisions, such as canceling refugee flights, deploying troops to the border, and allowing federal authorities to arrest people near schools and churches. The crackdown on illegal immigration has intensified with leadership changes at federal agencies, like the Department of Justice, and threats against local officials who oppose his policies.
This aggressive approach is creating debate and division across the country, as various sectors question the legality and humanity of these measures.
