The Trump administration has ordered U.S. public health officials to immediately stop their collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). The directive was issued on January 27 by John Nkengasong, a senior official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In a memorandum, Nkengasong instructed CDC leaders to suspend any joint activities with the WHO until further notice.
Negative Impact on Global Health Efforts
The sudden halt to collaboration represents a significant setback for international public health efforts. Experts warn this decision will delay research on the Marburg virus and monkeypox in Africa. It will also hinder monitoring of other emerging health threats, such as avian flu outbreaks in U.S. livestock. This comes at a critical time, as the world needs strong cooperation to combat disease outbreaks.
The measure also prohibits CDC staff from visiting WHO offices, further limiting the exchange of vital information. The impact on investigations and global response coordination will be considerable.
U.S. Withdrawal from the WHO: A Financial Blow
The U.S. departure from the WHO would deliver a severe financial blow to the organization. The U.S. is the largest financial contributor to the WHO, providing $1.284 billion, which accounts for roughly 18% of the agency’s total budget. Germany and the European Union follow as major donors. If the withdrawal proceeds, the WHO would lose a critical funding source, affecting its ability to respond to future health crises.
Past Conflicts and Future Implications
Trump’s relationship with the WHO has been strained since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The president accused the organization of aiding China in covering up the initial cases of the disease. Despite the growing tension, the WHO has urged the U.S. to reconsider its decision. The official withdrawal could take several months to a year, leaving the organization in a state of prolonged uncertainty regarding its operations and future funding.
