Petro Bends to Trump: Will Accept Deportations to Avoid 25% Tariff

Gustavo Petro has agreed to Donald Trump’s demands to avoid the imposition of tariffs on Colombian imports. The deal, reached late Sunday, establishes that Colombia will accept deported individuals from the United States in exchange for Washington refraining from imposing a 25% tariff on Colombian products. The White House confirmed in a statement that the Colombian government accepted deportation flights without restrictions, even using U.S. military aircraft.

The Crisis and Diplomatic Resolution

The conflict began when Colombia rejected two deportation flights from the U.S., arguing that the conditions of repatriation did not guarantee respect for the dignity of migrants. This refusal enraged Trump, who, through threats of sanctions, pressured Petro to back down. The U.S. president not only mentioned tariffs but also imposed banking restrictions and revoked visas for Colombian officials.

Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo announced the resolution of the crisis in a diplomatic tone, emphasizing the collaborative work that led to the agreement. Through high-level meetings, Colombia agreed to accept deportees under dignified conditions, without compromising its sovereignty. The Colombian government expressed confidence that the agreement would be beneficial in the long run.

An Economic and Political Deal

The potential impact of the tariffs would have been devastating for the Colombian economy. 25% of Colombian exports go to the United States, particularly products like oil, coffee, and flowers. Coffee alone represents about $2 billion in annual exports. For this reason, the economic pressure on Petro was significant, and he decided to concede to Trump’s demands.

The deal underscores Colombia’s strategic importance to the U.S. in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime. Although Petro has been critical of U.S. foreign policy, particularly on immigration issues, his government had to prioritize the country’s economic stability in the face of a threat of severe trade sanctions.

Trump has made it clear that he will continue to pressure other countries to accept mass deportations, which could lead to further diplomatic clashes in the future.
