New Wildfire in Hughes, California: 20,000 Evacuated as Flames Spread Rapidly

Por: Julia Martínez

A new wildfire in Hughes, California has forced the evacuation of nearly 20,000 people. The fire began early in the morning and quickly spread to the mountainous areas north of Los Angeles. Within hours, the flames consumed 21,000 hectares of land near Castaic Lake, a popular recreation area. A thick column of smoke was visible for miles around.

Highway Closure and Mass Evacuations

The fire advanced so quickly that Interstate 5, one of the main highways connecting northern and southern California, was closed over a stretch of 48 kilometers. Firefighters and ground teams, with support from tanker planes, worked to prevent the flames from crossing the highway and reaching residential areas. In Castaic, nearly 19,000 residents were ordered to evacuate, while another 15,000 people were warned to evacuate immediately due to the fire’s proximity.

Local authorities also issued warnings about toxic ash in the air, which may contain heavy metals and arsenic, posing a health risk. Low humidity, dry vegetation, and strong winds contributed to the fire’s rapid spread, while firefighting teams battled other ongoing fires in the region, such as the Eaton and Palisades fires, which have already caused at least 28 deaths and destroyed 14,000 structures.

Extreme Weather Conditions in the Southern U.S.

While firefighters continue to battle the blaze, the southern U.S. is also dealing with a winter storm that has claimed three lives. The storm, which began in Texas, blanketed the Gulf Coast with snow and has moved eastward. The heavy snow and freezing rain have affected states such as Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. The storm caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights and the closure of schools and government offices. Subzero temperatures are expected to continue throughout much of the week, maintaining extreme conditions.
